AI digital twin videos: what they are and how to use them responsibly

AI can now create videos of you, speaking in your voice, from a script. It’s powerful — and it needs to be used carefully. Here’s a clear-eyed guide.

What is an AI digital twin?

An AI digital twin (sometimes called an AI avatar or AI clone) is a digital version of a real person, created from recordings of their face and voice. Once it is set up, you can type a script and the AI generates a video in which the twin appears to say those words, in a similar voice and style.

At a glance: the key points of this article.

For business owners, the appeal is simple: you can publish regular video without setting up a camera, doing retakes and editing every time.

How it works, step by step

  1. Consent and setup. The person being recreated agrees to it, and an account is created on an AI video platform — ideally in their own name.
  2. Recording samples. They record short video and voice samples, following the platform’s guidance on lighting, framing and speaking.
  3. Training. The platform processes the samples and creates the twin. Quality depends heavily on the samples.
  4. Scripting. Scripts are written and approved by the real person.
  5. Generation and editing. The platform generates each video. Captions, branding and formatting are added before publishing.

Where AI twins work well

  • Short educational tips — answering common customer questions.
  • Regular updates — weekly announcements, offers or reminders.
  • Course and onboarding videos — consistent explanations you would otherwise record again and again.
  • Multiple languages — many tools can generate speech in other languages, though quality varies and should be tested.

Where they don’t belong

  • Pretending to be someone else. Never create a twin of a person without their clear, informed consent.
  • Fake testimonials or endorsements. Using AI people to praise your product is misleading — and in many places, illegal.
  • Sensitive or personal messages where your audience expects to hear from you in person.
  • Claims you wouldn’t make yourself. The twin says only what you have approved.

Disclosure: be open about AI

Major platforms, including YouTube and Meta, have introduced ways to label realistic AI-generated or altered content, and in some cases require creators to disclose it. Rules change, so check each platform’s current policy before publishing. In practice, being open about using AI builds more trust than hiding it — your audience mostly cares that the advice is useful and genuinely comes from you.

What does it cost?

Most AI video platforms charge a subscription, often based on how many minutes of video you generate and which features you use. On top of that is the time — or the cost of help — for scripting, editing and publishing. Compare the total with what filming every video yourself really costs you in time.

A quick checklist before you start

  • You are recreating yourself (or someone who has given written consent).
  • The platform account is in your name, and you understand its terms, including how your samples are stored.
  • You have a list of topics your customers actually care about.
  • You will approve every script before a video is generated.
  • You know how you will label AI content on each platform.
  • You’ll review results after a month and adjust.

I set up AI digital twin videos for business owners — from sample guidance and scripting to finished, clearly disclosed videos. I’m also building my own twin to publish content for Digital Help Studio, so I’m learning what works in practice.

Is it legal to use an AI version of myself?

Creating an AI version of yourself, with your consent, for your own content is generally allowed, but laws vary by country. Follow each platform’s disclosure rules and never use it to mislead people.

Will my audience know it isn’t really me on camera?

Some will, especially as AI video becomes more common. That’s why clear labelling and scripts in your own voice matter more than trying to make it undetectable.

How long does it take to set up?

Recording samples can take less than an hour. Processing time and quality depend on the platform. Plan for a test round before publishing anything.
