Plenty of small business websites get visitors but very few messages. Usually the fix isn’t a total redesign — it’s a handful of small, specific improvements.
Start with the first five seconds
1. Say exactly what you do, for whom, and where
Your main headline should make sense to a stranger. “Wedding photography in Leeds for relaxed couples” beats “Capturing moments that matter”. Clever slogans can come later.
At a glance: the key points of this article.
2. Put one clear action above the fold
Choose the main action — call, WhatsApp, book or request a quote — and make it a visible button near the top of every important page.
3. Show a real face or real work
A genuine photo of you, your team, your premises or your finished work builds trust faster than stock images.
Make contacting you effortless
4. Offer more than one contact option
Some people prefer a form, others WhatsApp, a phone call or email. Give them the choice — especially on mobile.
5. Shorten your form
Ask only for what you need to reply well. Every extra field loses some people.
6. Test your contact form regularly
It sounds obvious, but broken forms are one of the most common reasons “the website doesn’t bring enquiries”. Send yourself a test every month and check your spam folder.
Build trust on the page
7. Use honest proof
Real reviews (with permission), photos of completed work, case studies and your experience all help. Never invent testimonials or numbers — people can tell, and it can break consumer laws.
8. Answer common questions
Add a short FAQ covering price approach, timing, process and area served. Every question you answer on the page removes a reason to hesitate.
9. Explain what happens next
A simple “1. Send a message, 2. We call you back, 3. You get a quote” lowers the fear of getting in touch.
Fix the technical basics
10. Make it fast on phones
Compress images, avoid heavy plugins, and check your site on a real phone using mobile data.
11. Give every service its own page
Specific service pages help visitors find what they need — and help Google show the right page for the right search.
12. Measure, then improve
Use a simple, privacy-respecting method to see which pages lead to enquiries, and connect Google Search Console to see which searches bring people in. Improve one thing at a time.
A quick self-check
Can a stranger understand what you do in five seconds?
Can they contact you in one tap on a phone?
Is there real proof you do good work?
Did your last test enquiry actually arrive?
