Is it worth hiring a web designer from India? An honest guide for international clients

Many businesses in the US, UK, Canada and Australia hire freelancers in India. Some have great experiences, some don’t. The difference is usually in how you choose and how the work is set up.

Why businesses hire designers in India

  • Value. Rates can be lower than in many Western markets, which lets small businesses afford custom work.
  • Skill. India has a large pool of experienced designers and developers who work with international clients every day.
  • Time zones can help. Work can happen while you sleep, so you wake up to progress.
  • English communication. Many Indian freelancers work comfortably in written and spoken English.

The real risks — and how to avoid them

Unclear scope

Most problems come from vague expectations. Agree the pages, features, content responsibilities, revision rounds and timeline in writing before paying.

Communication gaps

Different time zones and working styles can cause delays. Agree how and when you’ll communicate — email, WhatsApp, video calls — and the expected response times.

Quality that doesn’t match the portfolio

Ask for live links, not just screenshots, and check the sites on your phone. Ask which parts the person actually did.

Ownership and access

Make sure your domain and hosting are in your name, and that you receive the website files after full payment.

Payments

Use a traceable payment method with an invoice. Split payments into milestones rather than paying everything up front.

A checklist for choosing well

  • Live portfolio links you can click and test on mobile.
  • A short call or detailed written conversation before any payment.
  • A written quote with scope, timeline, revisions and support.
  • Clear milestone payments.
  • Agreement on who writes the content and who provides images.
  • Confirmation that you’ll own the final files and control the domain.
  • Honest answers — be wary of guaranteed Google rankings or “number one” promises.

How I work with international clients

I’m Brijaditya Sharma, based in India, building websites for small businesses worldwide. To make the decision low-risk, I build a free personalised demo first, so you see real work for your business before paying anything. Then:

  • A written quote with clear scope — pages, features and revisions.
  • 50% to start and 50% before launch, with invoices; international payments can be arranged through Skydo where available.
  • At least five revision rounds and 15 days of post-launch support.
  • Your files handed over after full payment.
  • Communication by email, WhatsApp or video call, in English, at times that suit both of us.

Quick answers

Common follow-up questions.

Still unsure? Ask me anything or message me on WhatsApp.

Will time zones slow the project down?

Not if communication is planned. Agree on a daily overlap window or a written update routine, and the difference often speeds things up.

How do international payments work?

Usually by bank transfer or a cross-border payment provider, with an invoice for each milestone. Agree the currency and any fees in the quote.

Is my website legally mine?

It should be. Make sure your quote states that you receive the files and rights to the custom work after full payment, and keep your domain in your own name.
